Ballet/Technique

Ballet refers to a formalized stle of dance with its origins in the Italian Renaissance court, further developed in France and Russia as a concert dance form. It is a highly technical form of dance with its own vocabulary. It has been influential as a form of dance globally and is taught in ballet schools around the world.

Technique refers more generally to a dancer's training and ability. In general, proper ballet technique requires good placement (or alignment), and turnout. Alignment refers to the dancer's ability to keep the head, shoulders, and hips aligned vertically. Turnout refers to the dancer's ability to complete movements with the legs rotated outward. Technique can also mean perfection in areas such as clean footwork, graceful porte-de-bras, and overall correct positions and lines/angles.

Hip Hop

Hip hop dance refers to dance styles primarily danced to hip hop music, or that have evolved as a part of the hip hop culture. Hip hop dance can be divided into old school and new school, but the separation between the two is somewhat ambiguous and thought to be evolving with the passing of time. Currently hip hop dance forms have emerged to be independent on the original culture, and many people - girls and boys - are dancing it today without having or having just a little connection to the original culture. (Wikipedia)   Because dance is fun, it accomplishes what many exercise programs do not -- the establishment of a long-term habit of fitness. Dance builds strength, balance, cardiovascular fitness, agility and flexibility, which are health benefits enjoyed by dancers of all age groups and ability levels.

Jazz

Jazz dance originated from the African American vernacular dance of the late 1800s to the mid-1900's.  Today, jazz dance is present in many different venues and different forms. Jazz dance thrives in dance schools and remains an essential part of musical theater choreography; it is sometimes interwoven with other dance styles as appropriate for the particular show. Jazz dancing can be seen in some music videos, and even a number of Las Vegas showgirls are jazz dancers. Jazz Dance can also be seen on the hit show, "So You Think You Can Dance", and is performed by dance companies around the world..

Lyrical

Lyrical dance is a fusion of ballet and jazz dance techniques. Lyrical dance challenges choreographers and dancers to use motion to interpret music and express emotion. A lyrical dancer's movements attempt to show the meaning of the music. Lyrical dance has a relatively recent history and a genesis based on the coming together of ballet with rock/folk/pop/alternative music and a variety of jazz dance styles and modern dance. It is mainly performed to music with lyrics, and the song's lyrics are a driving force and key inspiration for the movement. Choreography is often emotional, gripping, and exquisitely delicate, all at the same time.

Pre-Pointe / Pointe

Dancing en pointe is the action of rising to the tips of the toes while performing steps from ballet. Also known as pointe work, it is performed using hard–toed and stiff-shanked pointe shoes. Dancing en pointe requires strength and skill and is a central part of a ballet dancer's training and repertory.

Pom Pon

This style can incorporate all forms of dance to create visual effects primarily for entertaining at halftime shows. Poms are done with teams of 6 to 45 people and is one of the most public forms of dance where form, team uniformity, showmanship, precision and choreography are key.

Tap

A style of American theatrical dance using precise rhythmical patterns of foot movement and audible foot tapping.  Tap dance was developed in the United States during the nineteenth century, and is popular nowadays in many parts of the world. The name comes from the tapping sound made when the small metal plates on the dancer's shoes touch a hard floor. This lively, rhythmic tapping makes the performer not just a dancer, but also a percussive musician.

Tumbling

Tumbling is a gymnastics sport which combines the skills of artistic gymnastics on the floor and those of trampolining.
